Between the spicy rice, creamy guacamole, and fresh tomato salad, these sides are guaranteed to satisfy! Burrito lovers, raise your hand!  I have a serious obsession with Mexican food, and my favorite is hearty and tasty burritos! What’s not to love about them? They’re bursting with meat, rice, beans, veggies, guac, salsa, cheese – the works! There’s so much goodness stuffed into tender tortilla bread, sealing in all the amazing flavors. Burritos are phenomenal on their own, but festive side dishes make them even more fun and exciting! I’ve rounded up 14 Mexican sides that are packed with awesome flavors and textures and are fantastic with burritos. With these 14 sides, you’ll transform your meal from a Mexican dinner into a full-on fiesta!

1. Cilantro Lime Rice

Let’s start this list with a bang!  Okay, rice may not be the most exciting side dish out there, but when seasoned perfectly, it’s super sensational. You don’t even need a lot to flavor your rice, either. All it takes is some fresh cilantro and lime! It may sound basic, but it tastes amazing – especially inside a burrito. Try it!

2. Jicama Slaw

Also known as Mexican yam, this crop has the combined flavor of a pear and a potato. The taste may be subtle, but the crunch packs a punch! Jicama coleslaw is the perfect burrito side dish! It’s a fabulous combo that will tickle your tastebuds. For the slaw, you’ll need Jicama, cabbage, mango and fresh cilantro. Then, you’ll top it with a mango dressing that is absolutely to die for. Mmm. Get in my belly!

3. Mexican Street Corn (Elote)

Mexican sweet corn or elote is another classic, lip-smacking Mexican side dish. It tastes fantastic, both on its own and with a burrito. This popular street food is bursting with flavor, texture, and color. It’s fun to eat, and it’s pretty, too! It’s definitely Instagram-worthy. Elote is not your ordinary grilled corn. Mayo, sour cream, and chili powder takes it to the next level! It’s loaded with cotija or queso fresco cheese for a hint of saltiness. Together, the toppings make a wonderful contrast to the sweet juices of the corn.

4. Refried Beans

Refried beans or frijoles refritos are a thick and creamy dip that’s perfect for any Mexican dish. Whether you use it as a chip dip or taco topping, you can’t go wrong! They’re so hearty and satisfying! It tastes fantastic in a burrito as well. Throw some of those beans into your wrap! Their sweet and earthy flavors work wonderfully with the rest of the burrito ingredients.

5. Mexican Rice

Mexican rice is another spectacular starchy dish to pair with burritos.  Simmered in tomatoes, onions, and chicken stock, it definitely packs a punch. I love the black beans in the mix too! For even more flavor, season it with cilantro and lime juice. You can also add a kick by loading it with fresh chiles.

6. Chips and Homemade Salsa

It’s not a fiesta without chips and salsa. Is there a more iconic duo? The crunch… the flavor! So simple, yet so spectacular at the same time!  What I love about this pair is how easy it is to prepare. To make the salsa, you only need four ingredients: fresh tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and lime. Chop them and mix in a bowl, and voila, you’re halfway done! Then, for the chips… well… just open a bag of chips. Easy-peasy!

7. Chips and Guacamole

Chips and guacamole are another must-have in any Mexican party. Rich and creamy, guacamole is pure love in a dip. It’s everything I want on my chips! And I want a lot of it in my burrito, too. If you’ve never made guacamole before, now’s the time. You guys, it’s so easy, anyone can make it. And it tastes so much better and fresher than store-bought, too! All you need are avocados, cilantro, red onion,  jalapeno, lime juice, cumin, and salt. Mash those together in a bowl, and it’s done!

8. Black Bean Soup

Thick and creamy black bean soup is a fantastic burrito side, especially if you’re feeding a crowd. It’s hearty, tasty, and a cinch to make! All it takes are basic pantry ingredients. With canned black beans, onions, celery, carrots, bacon, and Mexican spices, you can make this scrumptious soup.

9. Frijoles Borrachos

Also called drunken beans, frijoles borrachos is a combination of beans, bacon, and beer. How can you go wrong with that? This dish is so flavorful, and it’s also easy to make. Sure, traditionally, it takes hours to simmer the beans and bacon and beer. But there’s a way to make it much, much faster.  The secret? Instead of dried pinto beans, use canned instead! Don’t worry, they’ll still taste wonderful.

10. Avocado Tomato Salad

Avocados, tomatoes, cucumber, corn, and jalapeno drizzled with olive oil, lime juice, and cumin: that’s what I call the ultimate summer salad!  Pair this refreshing side with your burrito for a (relatively) healthy meal.

11. Chicken Tortilla Soup

Chicken tortilla soup is the quintessential comfort food! Serve this with your burrito for a hearty and cozy dinner.  Tomato soup that’s bursting with chicken, beans, and corn — that’s what I’m talking about. The soup is loaded with tortilla strips, avocado, cilantro, and lime, too! It’s a magnificent dish!

12. Loaded Nachos

Nacho chips loaded with ground beef, refried beans, cheese, tomatoes, green onions – now that’s the stuff! Nachos and burritos in one meal? Yes, please! Both incredibly meaty and cheesy, these two make such a rich and hearty combination. And I’m here for it.  To me, the key to the perfect nachos is using two kinds of cheese: cheddar and Monterey Jack. Pop the nachos in the oven and wait until those cheeses melt into ooey-gooey perfection. So. Much. Goodness.

13. Seasoned Home Fries

No matter the entrée, no matter the cuisine, fries will always be an epic side dish.  They’re crisp on the outside, moist and fluffy on the inside, and so delicious! Fried spuds flavored with garlic, paprika, chives, salt, and pepper: these loaded fries are as good as it gets!  Burritos and fries are such a happy marriage of flavors and textures.

14. Cold Mexican Beer

When it comes to refreshments, nothing tastes better with a burrito than a cold bottle of Corona. It’s the perfect pair for any Mexican dish!  This popular Mexican lager has a mild taste with a hint of sweetness. It’s often served with a lime or lemon wedge to give it a bit of tartness. Its subtlety balances out strong flavors, which is why it tastes fantastic with a burrito. Click on a star to rate it!
